John Andrew Polzin

John (“Jack”) Andrew Polzin, 89, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019, at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center, Neenah, due to complications associated with a fall at home in early May.

Born in Shawano on Jan. 12, 1930, John spent his childhood in Clintonville, where his father worked for the Four Wheel Drive (FWD) Auto Company. John attended public schools in Clintonville, with the exception of his middle school years when his family made their home in Appleton during World War II. They later returned to Clintonville, and John graduated from Clintonville High School in 1949.

John married Dejon Goddake on Aug. 9, 1958. They were the second couple married at Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano and would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary Aug. 9, 2019. John and Dejon have remained in Shawano since they were married and both devoted their entire careers to educating young people in the community.

A 1953 graduate of Wisconsin State College-Stevens Point, John first earned a Bachelor’s of Education in intermediate and upper elementary education and taught elementary school for two years in Marion and Waupaca. He later attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating with a Master of Science in secondary social studies education.

When he had an opportunity to transfer to Shawano public schools, he spent 20 years teaching high school social studies and history in the Shawano School District. Later, he also received his certificate in library science from UW-Stevens Point and worked as the head librarian at Shawano High School for the last 10 years of his career.

In between his teaching assignments, John served in the U.S. Army for two years and was stationed overseas during the Korean War.

John retired from teaching in 1989 – some would say he retired before fulfilling his other true callings of becoming a meteorologist, political debate coach, ever-hopeful golf pro or tour guide for historical sites. However, he remained a dedicated fitness enthusiast throughout his lifetime. John was a long-time runner, and he competed in 10K and 5K events later in life. In addition to golfing and running, he also enjoyed biking, walking and snowshoeing. Former teaching colleagues may even remember the entertaining table tennis “tournaments” he hosted at home. John greatly enjoyed introducing his grandson Ian to golf and taking him to his first lessons with local pros at Shawano Lake Golf Course. And he always found time to exercise with his beloved late family dogs (Kirby, Barney, Cid and granddogs Chelsey and Kayleigh), playing Frisbee or catch with them and taking them on long walks.

In his spare time, John was a member of the Shawano County Area Retirement Teachers Association, served on the Zion Lutheran church council many years ago, volunteered with his grandson Ian to help Dejon at the Shawano Medical Center boutique, worked as an election official at the voting polls and volunteered in activities to help drive voter turnout. He also enjoyed keeping up with his favorite sports teams: the Wisconsin Badgers, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packers, Shawano Hawks and Clintonville Truckers. He followed many other area teams as well, including the UW-Stevens Point Pointers and UW-Green Bay Phoenix.

Proud to live his life computer-free, reading was another favorite pastime of John’s as evidenced by his own large “archive” of newspapers, magazines and books. Many will remember John for sharing an article or book with them — often passed along with some color commentary. He was known for his dry sense of humor and quick wit, and he loved a good joke but admittedly had a hard time remembering the punch lines, so he often would repeat the same one-liners and knock-knock jokes or share a favorite cartoon instead.

John is survived by his wife, Dejon, whom he cared for at home for the past several years. Survivors also include his daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla and Paul Zahn, of Shawano; daughter, Mary Polzin, of Minneapolis; grandson, Ian Zahn, of Sheboygan; and two granddogs, Maisy and Josie, of Minneapolis. John also is survived by sisters-in-law, Ruth Polzin and Kathi Polzin; brother-in-law, Jim Hoffmann; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leo C. Polzin; mother, Dorothy (Sorensen) Polzin Raffin; Dorothy’s second husband, Art Raffin; brothers, Robert Polzin and Dr. Tom Polzin; sister, Patti Hoffmann; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Jim Grothe; and niece Amy Polzin.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2019, at Zion Lutheran Church, in Shawano, with Pastor Scott Ludford officiating. Visitation will be at church from 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2019, until time of service. Military rites will be conducted by the Shawano American Legion Post 117. Swedberg Funeral Home, Shawano, is handling arrangements. A private burial will be held at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery, Shawano.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in John’s name to the Shawano County Humane Society, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or Zion Lutheran Church.

John’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses, doctors, therapists, staff and special friends at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah and Shawano Health Services for providing wonderful care and support to John during the past two months.

They had eight children, Allen (Sherri), Dennis (Julianne), Pamela (Hank) Lorenz, Sandra, Russell (deceased), Rick (Carol), Angela (Don) Barnes, and Michael (Mary Beth). A niece, Betty Stiefel, was like a fourth daughter to her. Gloria is further survived by 23 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

Gloria attended high school in Hartford and was her class valedictorian, active in intramurals, glee club and was prom queen. Gloria had a tremendous spirit, was outgoing and social, hardworking, stubborn, generous and caring; qualities she shared with Floyd and that made them a perfect match. She and Floyd loved to dance, winning many competitions, even appearing on the Lawrence Welk show. During their years of marriage they loved to entertain countless friends and play sheepshead and bridge.

Early on, they farmed in Dodge County. In 1967, they purchased the Golden Night Supper Club in West Bend before returning to farming in the Embarrass and Shawano areas in 1974. During this time, Gloria was a school board member, homemaker’s group president, and employed part time doing USDA crop surveys, and later driving for Shawano County Office on Aging, all of this while raising eight children. Eventually they built a log cabin in the woods in Shawano, which sadly burned in 2014. Her beloved Floyd’s death soon followed. While living in Embarrass and Shawano, Floyd and Gloria were devoted members of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church-Belle Plaine, where Gloria was active in the choir. From 2014 until her passing, Gloria was a resident at Pine Manor (nka The Pines) in Embarrass.

Gloria, a farmer to the core, was connected to nature and enjoyed gardening. She loved all animals including the birds and deer that lived near the house, the dogs that immediately took to her when they came to visit with family and friends, and a very special cat that survived the house fire. Most of all, Gloria was our loving and devoted mom and grandma. She loved to read to all children, not just her own, and they would climb in bed with the books they picked, often staying there for hours. Grandchildren lucky enough to be there on Saturday mornings were treated to her serenading the birds until everyone awoke, and her famous homemade pancakes with real maple syrup. She was also famous for her cookies; the jar was never empty and she often mailed cookie packages to loved ones. In the evenings you might find her sipping a brandy old fashioned sweet with a wedge of orange, watching the Wheel of Fortune.

Gloria loved to socialize. Everyone was welcome at her home – anytime day or night. As Alzheimer’s took hold, her phone became her lifeline. She would call family members and friends sometimes five times a day or many more. Her record month was 1,700 minutes. Her wonderful sense of humor and common sense, which she instilled in her children, served her well. She didn’t sweat the small stuff. Until her death, she tried hard to remember the names of all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren when she saw their pictures.

Gloria will always be remembered for her love of life, being feisty and determined, toughness during times of trouble, her cheerfulness, beautiful smile, and most of all her contagious giggles and laugh. We are comforted to know Gloria has reunited in eternity with Floyd in heaven, an even better place now with her there.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 1 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church-Belle Plaine. The Rev. Kurt D. Kluge will officiate and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the Beil-Didier Funeral Home in Clintonville, and on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the church.

Donations in Gloria’s honor may be made to Shawano County Humane Society, 1290 Jaycee Court, Shawano, WI 54166; or to St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, W8302 Belle Plaine Ave., Shawano, WI 54166.
