LaVera Ann “Vera” Schroeder Hilgenberg

LaVera Hilgenberg, 91, of Shawano, passed away on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, at her home. LaVera Ann “Vera” Schroeder Hilgenberg was born in Shawano County on May 23, 1926, to August and Jessie (Martens) Schroeder. The youngest daughter of eight children, she learned early on that integrity and hard work make you a worthy person. Vera made friends easily, and her humor was contagious. During her adolescence she learned beautiful etiquette working as a housekeeper for a wealthy family in Milwaukee, modeled for Pranges in Green Bay and met Neil C. Hilgenberg while he was on leave from the Navy during World War II. You might say it was love at first sight, and what a team they made. Vera and Neil strived for a better life having experienced the Great Depression. They wanted more and were determined to achieve at a high level. Education was a top priority, and they wanted college educations for each of their children.

At an early age, Vera and Neil ran the Kaukauna Hotel. From there, it was the auto sales business. Then in the early 1960s, they embarked into the real estate business in Shawano. Vera was the money manager and could she stretch a dollar. Amazing. She also became the queen of remodeling. Give her a hammer, a shovel, a paint brush, and watch her change a tired old house into a beautiful living space.

In between all the businesses came the four boys, Michael, Terry, Philip and Mark. Vera would joke she had five boys (Neil included) and “Mom” was truly the center of love for everyone. A consummate wife, mother, teacher and Christian, Vera taught Sunday school and participated in many leadership positions at the First Presbyterian Church as an Elder and Deacon. Vera was a member of the Shawano Lake Lioness and very much enjoyed golfing and bridge with her lady friends when able. Time was never a challenge nor was energy. You could find Vera visiting the nursing home, giving communion and visiting shut-ins. She often commented “how very lucky we are.” That “lucky” made us all very lucky to have our Mom be the exceptional model of living, learning and loving life to its fullest. And now she is with her beloved Neil whom she has missed so very much.

Vera is survived by her four sons, Michael, of Rancho Mirage, California, Terry (Bonnie), of Shawano, Philip (Kathy) and Mark (Debbie), of Green Bay; 10 grandchildren, Heath, of Palm Desert, California, Heidi, of Kansas City, Missouri, T.J. (Andie), of Appleton, Holly, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Chad (Molly) of Kneeland, California, Scott of Portland, Oregon, Christopher of Chicago, Illinois, and Elizabeth, Madison (Chris) and Kyle, of Green Bay; great-grandchildren, Quinn, of Palm Desert, California, Adelyn and Eliam, of Appleton, Crosby and Marlowe, of Green Bay; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Neil; her parents; three sisters, Della Wilt, Eleanore Belongia and Evelyn Truppe; and four brothers, Earl, Lyle, Archie and James Schroeder.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church in Shawano with the Rev. Blake Blakesley officiating. Burial will be in Lake Drive Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services on Saturday. Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

A very special heartfelt thank you to Jenny, Cookie, Elma, Donna, Laura, Linda, Beth, Sue and Michelle; and Dr. Mindy and the ladies of ThedaCare Hospice. Memorials have been established at Safe Haven of Shawano and First Presbyterian Church of Shawano.

Beverly Lou Aschenbrener, 78, of Shawano passed away on Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, surrounded by her family. Beverly was born on July 1, 1939, in Green Bay, the daughter of the late Raymond C. and Lucille (Stockemer) Ford. She graduated from The Academy in Green Bay and then received her degree from St. Norbert College in De Pere. On June 22, 1963, Bev was united in marriage to Daniel Frank Aschenbrener at St. Joseph’s Church in Green Bay. Two years after being married, Dan and Bev moved to Sheboygan. In 1966, they moved to Shawano where they raised their four children. Teaching young children was one of her greatest joys in life next to her family. She taught elementary school in Appleton and later in Sun Prairie while Dan finished law school. For many years, she was a full-time mother and homemaker until going back to work as a substitute teacher in Shawano for 15 years. Sharing the simple things in life with her family brought her much happiness — fishing, cooking, gardening, decorating and doing crafts were among the things she loved. She enjoyed making memories with good friends, including her Four Seasons couples’ group as well as many of her other friends in Shawano.

Above all, Bev had a strong faith in God. In 2000, she and Dan traveled to Medjugoreje, Bosnia, for a couple’s spiritual retreat. It was there that her devotion to the Blessed Mother and Christ strengthened even more. She carried her faith to the very end.

She and Dan were married for 54 years and she deeply loved him, their children and grandchildren. Just before Bev passed, she opened her beautiful blue eyes for the first time in several days, looked at her husband, each of her children and her grandson, Alex. What a gift from God!

Bev is survived by her husband, Dan; their four children, Dave Aschenbrener, of Gresham, Lisa (Craig) Crawford, of Dubuque, Iowa, Lori Aschenbrener, of Westby, and Beth (Dan) Burke, of Plainfield, Illinois; four grandchildren, Alex Aschenbrener, Cole Crawford, Brandon Crawford and Julia Crawford.

Funeral services for Bev will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano with the Rev. Tom Farrell officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial fund has been established for St. Vincent De Paul or SAM25 in Bev’s name.

The family wishes to thank Maple Lane, ThedaCare Hospice and hospital and Shawano Ambulance Service for their wonderful care.
