Don graduated from Green Bay West High School and went on to work as an engineer for Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 42 years. He also taught diesel engine classes for 14 of those years. On Aug. 31, 1978, Donald was united in marriage to Ruth H. Mayer in Menominee, Michigan. In his free time, Don loved to fish, whether by boat or just parking the old camper next to the Menominee River with Ruth appreciating the view of God’s country rolling by. Don had a “green thumb” and always kept an impressive garden that produced plenty of vegetables to keep friends and family supplied. He also had a passion for baking and cooking and always seemed to “accidentally” drop something on the floor for one of his dogs, Taffy, Kujo or Boomer. Don was a kind, caring, and generous man with a contagious smile. He was always aware and in tune with the needs and concerns of others and he was always there with a helping hand and his great smile. Friends and family were always welcomed into his home with open arms. He loved visitors and his hospitality and cooking skills made his guests feel at home. Whenever it was time to go, without fail, Don would say “Come back when you can stay longer.”

Donald is survived by his children, Victoria (Lonnie) Annan, of Berthoud, Colorado, the Rev. Randy (Kathryn) Van Pay, of San Antonio, Texas, Russell (Stacy) Van Pay, of Weatherford, Texas, and Rory (Robyn) Van Pay, of Berthoud, Colorado; stepchildren, Ryan (Molly Talono) Dorak, of Abrams, James (Wendy) Delvoye Sr., of Green Bay, and Donna Vanderveren, of Green Bay; daughter-in-law, Linda Van Pay, of Pulaski; 20 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Arnold (Janice) Van Pay, of Kent, Washington; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, on Jan.25, 2013; two sons, Ronald and Ricky; and his parents.

A funeral service honoring Donald will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church at White Clay Lake with the Rev. Steve Pockat officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at Swedberg Wendt Funeral Home in Bonduel on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, from noon until 3 p.m. and again at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral.

Lawrence W. McFarlane

Lawrence Willard McFarlane passed quietly on the evening of Jan. 29, 2018, at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland after a prolonged illness. Larry was a long-time resident of Bowler, where he spent much time in retirement fishing (lake and ice), hunting, making wood, growing vegetables and flowers, and watching deer and turkeys on the field behind his house. His bird feeders were always full. He lived alone for many years, but was outgoing and friendly towards everyone he knew, and he knew many.

Larry spent most of his life in Wisconsin, save his time in U.S. Air Force from 1950-1953 when he served in Washington, D.C., and Alaska. He married Carla Ottman in September 1950 and eventually settled in southeastern Wisconsin after his discharge from the military. There he learned the tools and techniques of working with iron and steel. After working for others for a decade, he decided to go into business for himself, establishing L&R Crane and Hoist Corp. The company built and repaired all sizes of overhead cranes. As it grew, his business took him all over the United States, and many L&R cranes continue in operation to this day. He took great pride in what he built.

Above all else though, he seemed most happy when pulling a slab bluegill out of a hole in the ice on a lightweight jig pole or catching the same fish on a small popper with one of his many flyrods. He travelled far and wide looking for “the nice ones,” making trips to northern Minnesota, North Dakota and far northern Wisconsin multiple times. In the end, he always caught more fish closer to home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alma (Johnson) McFarlane; four sisters, Shirley Hoffman, Patricia Nelson, Nellie DeBroux, and Georgetta Ladwig; two brothers, Donald and Robert McFarlane; two sons, Randy and John McFarlane; and his wife, Carla (Ottman) McFarlane.

He is survived by his brother, Jerry (Mike) McFarlane; six children, Lawrence G. McFarlane (Marge), Dale McFarlane, Linda Schubert, Mark McFarlane (Dawn), Neal McFarlane (Bonnie) and Kathleen Chmiel; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren too numerous to mention.

He will be missed as father, brother, grandpa and friend to all. May he rest in peace with a fishing pole in hand, and a limit of nice ones in the cooler.

A memorial visitation will be held at a later date.

From there, he moved his family to Oshkosh to work at Lone Elm Cheese Factory. Gerald was deemed disabled in 1978, but always took on various jobs, such as delivering papers for Star Shoppers to driving cars for King Clift Auto.

He always had a love for cars, whether he was driving them or watching them on the racetrack. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, bingo and gambling at any casino that was close to home. During family holidays he would enjoy playing dice and poker, where he usually always won all our money. No matter the situation, he was always there and had a way of putting a smile on your face with all of his cheesy jokes.

He loved his family dearly and had a special love for his great-granddaughter Morgan. Morgan was the joy of his world and always made him light up and smile whenever she walked into the room, even in his final days.

Gerald is survived by a son, Jeffrey (Elaine) Wilke, of Oshkosh; three daughters Victoria (Thomas) Wilke, of Oshkosh, Wendy Wilke, of Oshkosh, and Lisa (Larry) Kryzaniak, of Oshkosh; 11 grandchildren, Jason, Josh, Nick, Dalton, Ashley Tara, Jason, Danielle, Levi, Mike and Amanda; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harley Wilke of Oshkosh.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carol; a son, David; a daughter, Dawn Soman; one brother; and eight sisters.

Gerald leaves behind his companion of 10 years, Charlene Wesenberg.

Memorial services for Gerald will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 338 N. Eagle St. in Oshkosh. Visitation will be on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with service immediately following.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Gerald’s memory.

Gerald’s family would like to extend our gratitude to Dr. Gremminger and Dr. Larsen, along with the hospice staff at Mercy Medical Center, with a special thank you to Dr. Foley, who took the time to check on him his final day, even on his days off.
