Martin J. Boerst

Martin J. Boerst, 80, of Manitowoc, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center in Manitowoc.

Marty was born on Nov. 30, 1938, in Shawano to the late Martin A. and Margaret (Klosterman) Boerst. He graduated from Bonduel High School with the class of 1957. Marty furthered his education at UW-Stevens Point where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education with an emphasis in social studies. Later he went on to UW-Oshkosh where he earned his master’s degree. Marty came to Manitowoc in 1961 and worked as a teacher at Washington Junior High School in the Manitowoc Public School District. He taught for 39 years, retiring in 2000. On Aug. 22, 1964, Marty married Jane Worthen at Trinity Episcopal Church in Oshkosh. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage and together raised their three sons. Marty was an avid Wisconsin sport fan and enjoyed watching the Brewers, Badgers and Packers. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was active in the community as a member of the Golden K Kiwanis and the Manitowoc Lions Club. Marty was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where he was active for many years and sang in the church choir.

Survivors include Marty’s wife, Jane; three sons, Christopher, Charlotte, North Carolina, Timothy (Angelique), Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Andrew (Aimee), Grafton; five beloved grandchildren, Cora, Alexis, Margaret, Anna and Jonathan; and a sister, Marna (Ken) Runge, Cecil.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1712 Menasha Ave., Manitowoc. The Rev. Zachary DeArmond will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.harriganparksidefuneralhome.com

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Marty’s name to Redeemer Lutheran Church.

The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Crematory, North 11th and St. Clair streets, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
